Your Tier Score is an Indication of How Much You’ve Lost

Casino Loyalty Programs are set up to reward players that lose. I’ll put to it you bluntly without sugarcoating it all; the bigger of a loser you are, the better the casino is going to treat you. Seriously, when someone shows up with a Seven Star rewards card, casino staff starts bending-over backwards to make sure this player is well taken care of; he can have anything he wants or requests within reason. Show tickets, limo service, free flights, and VIP suites, all that’s a no-brainer; give it to the man. Seven Stars lose more money than anyone else who gambles in casinos. Of course, some of them might also have hit the jackpot on the Megabucks machine and are only giving back their winnings. So yes, technically it is possible to win overall and be a Seven Star, though for the most part, your tier score is an indication of just how much money you’ve lost.

Even So I still Love Casinos and VIP Programs

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a casino player myself. I’m a gambler… and, I love action more than anyone. In fact, I’m also damn good at working the system. I made it to 11,000 tier score (enough for Diamond) in the Harrah’s Total Rewards program in 2009 over a six week period and only managed to lose $1,850. I spent the next thirteen months staying in Las Vegas Hotels, while taking trips to Tunica, Lake Tahoe, Atlantic City and New Orleans and all my hotel stays were either free, or deeply discounted. The deal at the time… Harrah’s would give 5 nights free, after 2 days you could get another 5 nights free. So for the first few months I was staying 5-2-5-2-5-2 rotations where I paid for cheap hotels for two nights and then showed back up for 5 nights free at casinos such as Caesars Palace, Bally’s, Flamingo, Rio Suites and Harrah’s. In time I learned that small action to most off-strip casino properties was enough to earn free nights elsewhere. Seriously, after my initial period I didn’t gamble much at all… and most of my time was spent playing $20.00 per hand table games, drinking having a good time and not losing much.

Some Key Casino VIP Points to Understand

The point I’m trying make… this article isn’t coming from someone who is anti-casino. In fact I love casinos and also to an extent love the casino loyalty programs just the same. I just, in having worked the system better than most, learned a few things that you might find helpful. First let me make two points.

All those extra perks you’re getting by being a Platinum, Diamond, Emerald, Black or whatever other title your VIP card reads, might not actually be worth it.

The reason everyone remembers who you are and makes you feel at home is because it is their job. Yes, casino dealers on the strip do get lonely and enjoy seeing familiar faces and some of it is sincere, but remember first and foremost you’re treated the way you are because it is their job.

Both of those statements probably come off as common sense. When you add real life emotion, sense of accomplishment, and the like to them… these factors alone cause most casino gamblers to lose hundreds, or thousands of dollars more than they need to. In case it is of interest to you, let me go ahead and address this in more detail.

Moving up in Tiers might not be worth it

I’m rather convinced at programs such as Total Rewards and M Life, the added benefits are not worth their price. For example Total Rewards and M Life will send out three free weeknight comps regularly to their entry level VIPs. These are given out liberally to anyone who gambled 4 hours in a single session during a previous stay. With M Life you get the added benefit of a faster comp point rate when a higher tier VIP, but that shouldn’t be a concern because getting comp points means losing more money. Most of us are concerned with the hotel stays, not extra points. Now back to Total Rewards as Platinum you’ll get 4 weeknights free, and as Diamond you’ll get five any-nights free. Well honestly 3 nights is enough for most people. If you’re going to stay in Las Vegas for a week, for the other four nights shop the net using our advice on booking a Las Vegas trip to grab a great deal somewhere else. Vegas is MASSIVE it is so much larger than the strip and there are some nice casinos to see such as Boyd Gaming’s Suncoast part of the Bconnected VIP program which is located in Summerlin Las Vegas.

So what else is it other than 1 or 2 free nights you’re giving up? Perhaps the end of the year shopping spree, but again this is given to you because you’ve lost a lot of money. Access to Winter Fest and Spring Fest… Okay that might be worth it, but only if you’re close. If you’re a 2800 tier score Gold with a few months left in the year, making the extra push to Platinum might be a good idea. What’s the need for Diamond though? What this will get you is front of the line access to the cage and taxi lines, special seats in restaurants, and one additional show ticket per month. Okay, those benefit costs most people $3,000 to $20,000 in casino losses per year. One extra show ticket – eh when gambling ask the host and you’ll likely get one. If not… network with some Diamond members at your table and ask them if they plan to use their show tickets. There are tons of Diamonds all over Las Vegas that don’t use show tickets and love the idea of helping out. Access to the Lounge? Clearly you haven’t found the $4.99 buffets with much better than just toast, fancy chips and buffalo fried chicken on display. Nor have you have been to the dozens of local casinos that give out outstanding FREE buffets for just a couple hours play.

Let me pause right here and say: Total Rewards is an AWESOME program! It seriously is and if your natural gambling tendencies cause you to be Diamond you’ll be quite happy. I’m simply pointing out that gambling for the sole purpose of reaching higher tier scores, does not make sense in most cases.

Casinos Employees Treat Regulars the Same Regardless of VIP Status

A lot of people love seeing the same faces and that’s why they return to a certain casino. It is easy to fall into the illusion that these people remember you or treat you better because you’re a higher tier score VIP, and have a different color comp card. The staff comments on these things because it is their job to do so. Make friends with one just casino employee that was your favorite dealer and get to know them outside the casino and soon enough you’ll have far more sincere friends, because everyone else who enjoyed dealing to you wants to get to know you too. Unfortunately you’ll then need to stop playing in this casino as most have a policy of against entertaining customers outside of work. This is a lightly enforced policy but it creates more drama for the staff than it is worth when you become friends with most the shift. Over the years I’ve made a TON of friends in Las Vegas and when I visit, I now gamble in local’s casino with people who used to deal to me on the strip.

The Ultimate Point – You Might Save Money, Get Better Comps and Have More Fun

Rather than grinding it out with one VIP program consider doing this:

• Keep accounts with both MGM’s M Life and Caesars’ Total Rewards. If one of these programs is comping your hotel stay, give them four hours of table game action each day (or the equivalent machine coin-in) AND then during the trip don’t visit the other program’s properties (don’t even let them know you’re in town).

• Get out to a bunch of other casinos such as Stations and Boyd properties. But also join programs you’ve never joined before. There are tons of casinos in Las Vegas with their own internal rewards program. Visit these casinos, see which ones you like. When joining their rewards program you’ll be amazed at the offers you start to get, based on just a small amount of play.

If you’re concerned losing friends, get to be friends with the dealers of your old favorite casino, and invite them to come along with you. A good lead in… tell them you’re tired of the strip, love Las Vegas, and want to explore. Ask them for recommendations where to go, what their favorite casinos are. In time you’ll probably end up having lots of dealer friends you run into, or maybe even make plans to go gamble with direct as you start to see much more of Las Vegas. I’m not sure many reading will follow my advice, but if you do, the day your top tier VIP card turns to entry level while you’re still frequently visiting Las Vegas and still having fun, will be a totally liberating experience you’ll never forget. If that’s for you, I hope this advice helps as it’s all exactly what I did; this is my own personal experience.

Far Beyond the Basics

Spend a day as a dolphin trainer. Cook side by side with a celebrity chef. Get married aboard the Titanic. M Life is certainly not your old-school rewards program. It still offers the basic room, food and entertainment comps that have been the staple of previous MGM loyalty programs, but the pampering is taken to entirely new levels with such innovations as “M Life Moments” and “Exclusive Tier Benefits.”

Upon joining M Life, each new member receives a unique ID number. This number allows the M Life system to keep a record of every action taken, from check-in at the front desk to meals ordered through room service, drinks at the lobby bar, slot machine play, tickets booked at shows, shopping for souvenirs, and much, much more.

As of mid-June 2011, only customer spending on the casino floor was being tracked, but nongaming spending is scheduled to be added to the system in September. That means MGM guests who are members of M Life will get credit for ever penny they spend, and that credit can be turned into a fabulous array of awards.

Getting Credit Where Credit Is Due

M Life members accumulate redeemable credits in four different ways. The first of these, PointPlay, provides casino Players Club points that can be turned into cash for additional play. Points are earned at a rate of at least one for every $2 of slot play or $10 of video poker action. As it currently stands, table games are not eligible for points.

FreePlay is the second form of credit—promotional cash that can be used on members’ favorite games. It may be awarded as incentives for reaching certain milestones, such as attaining a new tier of membership, or as gifts on special occasions, such as birthdays or anniversaries.

Third are the Express Comps, which are earned at a rate of two cents for every casino Players Club point earned. These cash-denominated comps are also awarded for table games activity, based upon the average amount wagered and the length of time played. They can be used to pay for rooms, meals and shows, along with other services offered by each property, such as spa treatments and nightclubbing. And for member convenience, Express Comps can be redeemed at M Life Express Kiosks, the M Life Players Club or online at mlife.com.

Holiday Gift Shoppe (HGS) Points are the fourth form of redeemable credit, and they accrue automatically in conjunction with spending and casino play throughout the year. Points earned between January 1st and December 11th can be exchanged at year end for jewelry, electronics, home and sporting goods, gift cards, additional FreePlay, and more.

Enjoying M Life Moments

One of the truly unique aspects of M Life is its menu of memory-making events that members can choose from called “M Life Moments.” From the countless experiences available at MGM Resorts International, a list of unique activities has been compiled, all of which are available by redeeming M Life credits.

For example, there are behind-the-scenes tours of Cirque du Soleil productions, dancing lessons with the world-renowned Jabbawockeez, and swimming with sharks in a 1.3 million gallon, 22-foot-deep Shipwreck Exhibit. VIP concert seating, cooking instruction from renowned chefs, private parties and sports viewing events, the chance to be the DJ at a hot Las Vegas club… these are just a few of the many experiences on offer exclusively to M Life members.

According to Bill Hornbuckle, who oversees the M Life program as MGM chief marketing officer, “People won’t be redeeming points for toasters. Loyalty programs that work involve emotion.” By creating unforgettable opportunities, from beachside casino parties to compiling the play list for the Bellagio fountains, M Life gets to the heart of what matters deeply to its members—truly personal once-in-a-lifetime Moments.

Getting Exclusive Tier Benefits

Although the benefits of membership in M Life are open to all who join, the very top privileges are reserved for those who are most loyal to the program and make the most of the system. All members start out at the Sapphire level and have the opportunity to rise through higher and higher tiers—from Pearl to Gold and eventually Platinum.

One of the key perks of the higher tier levels is that casino Players Club points and Express Comps accrue much faster thanks to accelerated “Bonus Points.” Another important aspect is that the number of credits required for obtaining free rooms, meals, show tickets and M Life Moments may be discounted by tier, thereby providing even greater access to program benefits at the higher levels. Other benefits include priority check-in/out, room upgrades, line passes and retail shopping discounts. Top-tier members may be assigned casino hosts to assist them, too.

Currently each member’s tier level is determined by the total number of “Tier Credits” accumulated in conjunction with slot and table play and valid for one year from the time they are earned. On reel and video slot machines, members receive 10 Tier Credits for every $2 of coin-in. For video poker and specialty games, the rate is 10 Tier Credits for every $10 of coin-in.

Promotion to the Pearl level requires 25,000 Tier Credits, while Gold starts at 75,000 Tier Credits and Platinum at 200,000. As the M Life program continues to evolve, nongaming spending will also be taken into account, providing new opportunities to earn additional benefits at restaurants and shops.

The Couples Advantage at M Life

As is the case with most loyalty programs, the benefits of M Life are non-transferable. That includes M Life accounts, points, FreePlay, complimentaries (“comps”), Express Comps, tier credits, and all other membership benefits. Furthermore, an M Life member’s card or ID number may not be used by another player to accrue points, comps or credits.

However, M Life recognizes that couples make up a huge portion of the clientele at MGM Resorts, so the system has added a new wrinkle just for twosomes. The rules allow up to two eligible M Life members residing at the same address to link accounts and share M Life benefits. That means a potential doubling of opportunities for many members, who would otherwise have to participate alone.

Participating MGM Resorts

The M Life program is universally integrated at all of the major MGM properties. A single membership ID is all that’s required to gain and use credits at 15 different resorts including their flagship MGM Grand on the Las Vegas Strip and its upscale expansion, The Signature at MGM Grand. It also covers two of the hottest newest venues in town—the twin-towered Aria Resort & Casino and the all-suite Vdara Hotel & Spa—both located at CityCenter.

Among the other eleven participants are some of the world’s other favorite holiday destinations on Las Vegas Boulevard—the Bellagio, Mirage, Monte Carlo, New York-New York, Luxor and Excalibur. The Mandalay Bay is also included, along with its luxurious high-rise companion, THE Hotel.

Beyond the Las Vegas Strip, there are two premier locations for M Life members in Mississippi—the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi with its beautiful Fallen Oak Golf Course and the lavish Gold Strike Casino Resort in Tunica. Michigan also has an M Life-linked property, the MGM Grand Detroit which was the first to introduce the program back on June 15, 2010.

Closing “M Life” Thoughts

When first reading the press we were skeptical of this program. The mention of tier score, and the VIP levels sounded a lot like Total Rewards by Caesars Entertainment, and PointPlay sounded a lot like Boyd’s B-Connected Program. It seemed almost too busy at first, considering some points are going to machine credits, others to comps, others to tier score, it was quite complex to make out. After reviewing in more detail, it started to make a lot more sense. What MGM did was take all the best features of their competitors, make them better, and add this together with their own unique innovations to create the ultimate casino loyalty program.

The only area of concern, and this most certainly doesn’t affect many of our readers, is… the program is not local friendly enough. With casinos popping up all over the country, less people travel to Las Vegas each year, which is where MGM is heavily based. If you’re a gambler who someday dreams about living in Las Vegas, and believes this might someday be a reality, consider Stations or Boyd Casino for your comp play focus. For everyone else we at Casino Loyalty Programs most certainly give “M Life” the nod, with only one competitor worth considering, Total Rewards by Caesars Entertainment.

BConnected Las Vegas

The heart of the VIP program is comp points which are as good as cash at any Bconnected property. To earn comp points simply use your Bconnected Rewards Card anytime you’re gambling in of their casinos. Points are earned as follows:

• Every dollar wagered in video poker and slot machines earns you one comp point.

• At table games each $10 increment of average wager size will earn you about $1.50 in comps per hour. For example if a player plays for an hour and their average bet is $30 they will receive around 4500 points which is worth $4.50 in cash back. Table game comps vary depending on the bet sizes the pit boss witnesses during your play, the speed of the game and the type of table game you’ve chosen to play.

These are however only the base earnings. There are three levels to the Bconnected program; Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. A player starts out at the Ruby tier, after earning 30,000 tier points they are upgraded to Sapphire and then at 250,000 points to Emerald. Tier point can accumulate faster than standard comp points, for example with slot machines players earn 2 tier points for every one comp point they are. The higher level VIP you are, the more comp points you earn.

• Ruby VIPs earn the standard comp rate (as shared above)

• Sapphire VIPs earn double the standard comp points

• Emerald VIPs earn triple the standard comp points

How much are Comp Points Worth?

Comp points are worth $1.00 per 1000 points. This means depending on your VIP level you’re getting 0.1% to 0.3% cashback on your gaming turnover.

Spending Bconnected Comp Points

Depending which property you’re playing at the procedure to convert comp points to gambling cash might differ. At The Orleans and Gold Coast (both located a couple miles off the strip) as well as Suncoast (located in Summerlin) and Sam’s Town (on Boulder Highway Strip) you can convert points to gaming credits right at any Slot or Video Poker machine using their Fast Play feature. In their downtown casinos (Main Street Station, California and Fremont) players must go to the BConnected Player’s Center to receive a voucher that can be converted into cash at the cage.

These restaurants are very competitively priced without the large mark-up Las Vegas strip properties charge. When using points this way the cash back rises from 0.1 to 0.3% to 0.167% to 0.5% depending on VIP level. Keep in mind, cash back has nothing to do with how much you win or lose, it is cash back on every wager you make period. There are additional benefits to the Bconnected program, but I have to cover their properties and then rant a bit first in order to give the program its proper due.

Boyd Gaming Casino

All Boyd Gaming owned casinos are integrated as part of the Bconnected program. While Boyd Gaming does not own any casinos on the Las Vegas Strip they do own two properties that are across I-15 from The Strip. These are Gold Coast and The Orleans. A shuttle is offered from both casinos to Las Vegas Blvd. Gold Coast is across the street from Rio making it a popular and inexpensive hotel option for players in the World Series of Poker. The Orleans has one of the largest off strip poker rooms in Las Vegas. Both casinos offer a large table game selection and reasonable payback on video poker. These are great budget strip alternatives.

However if you want to go old school Las Vegas, head downtown to Freemont Street Experience, the location of Binion’s and Golden Nugget. While Boyd doesn’t own either those properties they do own a property just as famous, Freemont Casino which is located right next to the two other legendary downtown casinos. Easy walking distances from these casinos are two additional Boyd Gaming properties, California Casino and Main Street Station.

There are also two local’s casinos located far from the Las Vegas Strip. Suncoast is located in Summerlin next to Rampart Casino and Sam’s Town is located on the Boulder Highway Strip. Suncoast is the highest end Boyd Gaming property and is a popular destination for off strip conventions. Sam’s Town is a local’s favorite which offers 20 times craps and full pay video poker such a 9/6 Jacks or Better and 10/7/5 Double Bonus. Many of the video poker machines at Sam’s Town still operate on coins as opposed to ticket in ticket out machines that most casinos in Las Vegas now use. Sam’s Town offers a shuttle to several Las Vegas Strip casinos.

If you’re a fan of Disneyland like resorts, stick to the strip. If you’re a gambler and want to be quietly treated as special but don’t care so much to have limos pick you up, and corporate execs at your beckoning call to wine and dine you and meet your every wish, Bconnected might be for you. The cash back rewards are simple, and more than fair. Their odds represent all Las Vegas was intended to be; make money very slowly while gamblers have a good time. At the strip it’s all about some guy in a suit figuring out what move might bleed more money from you, yes he makes you feel important, but that’s because he believes this is what will make the casinos the most money. At Boyd properties it is laid-back, sure want your comps here you go (they pay you in CASH, something you’ll never get on the strip). Want more, just ask. Loyal players have been given dozens of hotel stays each month, buffet coupons, sure no problem. Meanwhile at the strip these days you’ll find 6/5 blackjack, video poker odds that are a near crime, short pays on field bets at the craps table, and every other angle to get more money out of while they entice you with a new status to reach and do all the right things to help you feel you belong.

Now don’t get me wrong, I tell most of my friends, Harrah’s Total Rewards is right for them. However me myself once a several consecutive year Total Rewards Diamond holder, when I head to Las Vegas now most my own gambling is done either at The Orleans (no too far from the strip), or back where it all began in Downtown Las Vegas on Freemont Street Experience. I play at Bconnected properties quite a bit. Here I’m happy, feel no pressure, just relax and have a good time the same way Las Vegas was intended, with money I can afford to lose, and I rarely ever pay for a hotel stay, buffet or anything else. Enough though with my rant let me get back where I left off.

BConnected VIP Perks

I should start by mentioning if you’re a small time recreational gambler who won’t ever lose much, you’ll still be treated great at Bconnected casinos. Even at $5.00 blackjack you’ll get free drinks, if you can’t get a room, they might give you one at Freemont or California for $20 or $30 per night. Also all card holders, regardless of status, get a 10-20% discount at their gift shops, 10% discount on package liquor, and a $2 discount when paying cash for buffets. Even as just a Ruby tier member, the comps are decent enough.

As I mentioned earlier Ruby players and can play their way to Sapphire which earns them double comp points. What I didn’t mention is Sapphire players also receive special invitations to free tournaments and parties, line passes, priority seating at restaurants, and free hotel stays most often when they ask. A Sapphire can play their way to Emerald which gives them triple comp points, special parking privileges and priority access to the best complimentary room available when requested. The complimentary rooms are not written in as part of the program, but for the most part in addition to the special hotel offers sent to them each month, VIPs simply need to contact the host of their Boyd Gaming property of choice to request a room; these requests are rarely declined. Higher tier players will also receive monthly offers that include free hotel “packages” meaning they come with food credits, free slot play and perhaps other perks.

BConnected Rewards Program Conclusion

BConnected is a great option for players that are tired of being treated poorly by the large Las Vegas Strip casino companies. The video poker and slot paybacks are much higher, table game rules are looser, hotel comps are very liberal and the service given to mid range players is much better. On your next Las Vegas trip consider creating a relationship with Boyd Gaming and their BConnected Player’s Club. One high rolling trip will bring comp offers for years to come.

Las Vegas Rewards Cards

Every casino I know of in Las Vegas offers reward cards. It doesn’t matter if we’re talking the strip, downtown or local’s casino, there is a program you can sign up, get a rewards card and start earning comps. The programs are different at each casino, but generally speaking how it works is you’ll earn comp points based on coin-in for video poker and slots, and also earn at table games based on your average bet size, hours played and type of game selected. At most casinos these comp points can be used in lieu of cash for all non-gaming purchases. This means purchases made in the gift shops, food courts and restaurants, and for all hotel charges, including room cost, resort frees, movies ordered, room service and anything else. At some casinos comp points can also be redeemed for machine based gambling credits (video poker and slots). Where at a select few rewards programs they’ll actually allow you to receive your comps as cash.

Most casinos also offer a VIP program associated with their rewards card scheme. Members start out at entry level and once they reach a certain number of year-to-date comp point earnings their rewards card is upgraded to a fancier version; usually a different color card that displays a new title (example going from Gold VIP to Platinum VIP). The benefits for reaching a higher VIP level often involves free hotel stays (that don’t require you to use comp points) special seating in restaurants, discounts in the gift shop and front of the line access to the cage, taxi stand, hotel counters etc. At some casinos higher tier VIPs accumulate comp points faster, get lounge access, free show tickets, gaming comps and more. Again, each program is different.

The final area to comment on regarding reward cards is many cards are valid at multiple casinos. For example Total Rewards by Caesars Entertainment (formerly Harrah’s Entertainment) is valid at 38 casinos in the United States, seven of them on Las Vegas BLVD, six in Atlantic City, multiple properties in Lake Tahoe, New Orleans and Tunica, and a dozen or so additional US cities have a single Total Rewards casino. The top four multiple-casino reward card programs and their Las Vegas properties are covered below.

Top Rewards Programs valid at 5+ Casinos in Las Vegas

Total Rewards – Operated by the largest gambling company in the world Caesars Entertainment, Total Rewards is the rewards program of Rio Suites which is located just off the Las Vegas strip and is where the World Series of Poker (WSOP) is played each summer. They are also networked in with 7 casinos located on the Las Vegas strip. The complete list of strip casinos is Caesars Palace, Planet Hollywood, Harrah’s, Bally’s, Flamingo, Imperial Palace and Paris. Expert Tip: Total Rewards is the most liberal VIP program on the strip when it comes to giving complimentary hotel stays. These offers are emailed to existing card holders quite regularly.

M Life – Operated by MGM Resorts International, M Life is the largest casino loyalty program on the Las Vegas strip, with a full dozen casinos networked in. The complete list is Bellagio, Aria, Vdara, MGM Grand, Signature at MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, THE Hotel, Mirage, Monte Carlo, New York-New York, Luxor and Excalibur. Expert Tip: M Life has by far the nicest resorts in Las Vegas. If you want to earn comps towards staying in 5* hotels this is the comp program of choice.

Bconnected – This is the rewards card program of Boyd Gaming casinos. In Las Vegas they have two casinos located just off the strip (The Orleans and Gold Coast), three located in historical downtown Las Vegas within EASY walking distance of Golden Nugget and Binions which are Freemont Casino, California Casino and Main Street Station. They also own a casino in Las Vegas suburb Summerlin called Suncoast and another on Boulder Highway Strip called Sam’s Town. Expert Tip: Downtown casinos are known for offering better odds than the strip. The hotels at Bconnected’s downtown properties, while nothing special, are absolutely dirt cheap. Add these facts to an outstanding VIP program where comp points can be withdrawn as cash, and their three downtown properties are an excellent choice for Las Vegas value hunters.

Boarding Pass –Station Casinos Inc. has casinos designed for Las Vegas locals spread all over the city, most of them a several miles from the strip. This includes Aliante Station, Boulder Station, Fiesta Henderson, Fiesta Rancho, Green Valley Ranch, Palace Station, Red Rock, Santa Fe Station, Sunset Station and Texas Station. Expert Tip: If you’re a tourist looking for something different, check out Red Rock; this is one of our favorite off-strip resorts, with Green Valley our second favorite; both are well suitable for a tourist looking for a change of pace.

• Roulette – You won’t find too many favourable games in Las Vegas. To start the house advantage for American Roulette on 50/50 bets is 5.76%. Yes, roulette is a horrible game for the player and a great game for the house. Now if you’re betting $100.00 per game you can find French roulette at MGM, Mirage, Bellagio and Wynn which has a 1.35% advantage. They call it European Roulette which means it has a single 0, the reason we call it French roulette is they have the rule where only half your money is taken on 50/50 bets when the zero is spun (that’s a French rule). While comp point are the core of Total Rewards, comp points barely cover the tip of the iceberg of what this program offers; players are loyal to this program for value on the backend such as room comps. To cover this first, I’ll first need to explain the progressive levels of their VIP program.

Total Rewards VIP Levels

As you earn comp points at Caesars Entertainment Properties you also earn tier credits. For slots, and video poker you’ll earn tier credits at the same rate as comp points. For table games tier credits are also based on average stake, length of time per table, and type of game played, but the formulas are unique… sometimes you might earn more tier points than comp points, and other times vice versa; the margins can be considerable (see expert tips section covered later). For non gaming purchases (must present your card) one tier credit is earned for each one dollar spent. As you compile tier score earnings you’ll advance through the VIP reward levels.

• Gold Level VIP – This is the level all Total Reward members start out at. The benefits include comps (such as free and discount hotel rooms) based on play, a 10% discount in most of their casino gift shops, discounts for Norwegian Cruise Line bookings, and the ability to exchange points for a gift card (basically allowing you to give comp points to a friend). As a Total Rewards VIP you can expect to be rewarded. Using their website www.totalrewards.com you can log in with your card number and pin and access exclusive offers such as free hotel stays, discounted hotel stays, free cash offers etc. Also different properties have their own unique promotions for VIPs. Several times per year most properties offer reward multiplier days. For these a Platinum VIP might earn triple comp points for the day and a Diamond VIP 5x the standard number of comp points.

Caesars Entertainment is also well known for offering Diamond VIPs a shopping spree in Las Vegas just before Christmas. This is completely free, and does not require comp points. They arrange a huge show in their convention center that sees around 100 of the top retailers and manufactures show up with products available for purchase. Each member is given a gift card of a different denomination to go shop. I remember just a lower tier Diamond I had $538 available to spend when invited to this event in December 2008. They also gave me five nights free hotel stay and free entry to a $25,000 poker tournament on top of the shopping spree.

Also Diamond (and sometimes Platinum) VIPs are on occasion emailed some shocking value. Caesars (then Harrah’s) Entertainment once sponsored an MLB playoff game and gave Diamond VIPs access to presale sale passwords that allowed them to lock in tickets at face value. I also once got free tickets to a boxing match that was long sold out. While these are all perks for frequent gamblers, don’t be intimidated if you’re only a small time occasional gambler; they value your business as well and are still likely to comp occasional mid-week stays, or provide healthy discounts to keep your business.

Advantages of Total Rewards

One of the most promising aspects of the Total Rewards program is that it recognizes high rollers immediately, meaning that the rulebook goes out the door if a pit boss sees you betting heavy. Instant comps are readily available under this program and can include free hotel rooms/upgrades, show tickets, tournament entries, store purchases, and just about anything else a gambler could think of.

Loyalty points are calculated separately from tier points, and these can be used for just about anything available at a participating casino. Use them to pay for your room, for meals on the premises, purchases inside the boutiques, or even for casino chips. Total Rewards is very flexible in this aspect, which makes is an excellent overall program.

While the Gold and Platinum levels have little to brag about when compared to other loyalty programs, the incentives begin to really shine at the Diamond and Seven Stars tiers. Disadvantages of Total Rewards

Caesars Entertainment owned casinos are notorious when it comes to their odds. To give some examples: for field bets in craps they short-pay the bookend pairs, many blackjack tables are 6:5, the video poker odds shorted, and slots seem a little tight. If you know what to look for you can still find full pay blackjack and favorable video poker, and of course their baccarat, roulette, let it ride, three card poker and pai gow poker odds are as good as, or better, than anywhere else. You just need to be advised there are more “paying less because tourists don’t notice” type of games spread out at Caesars owned casinos than you’ll find elsewhere.

The other disadvantage… the comp card programs of most Las Vegas casinos allow members to exchange their points for video poker and slots play credits; with Total Rewards this is not an option. The players this affects most are video poker players, who already have to deal with short pays on top. If you’re a fan of video poker, consider staying just off the strip at The Orleans which is not a Total Rewards property, but rather part of Boyd’s B-Connected and offers great video poker odds.

Another negative about this program is that all tier points are based on a calendar year. That means that if you wager $5,000 in the month of December and $6,000 in January and February, you would not be invited into the Diamond level of the program without a pit boss override.

The final disadvantage, although also the case at most leading casinos… comp points expire after 6 months of inactivity. If you visit a casino and are sure you won’t be back within 6 months, be sure to spend your comp points before you go. If you want keep your comp points, you need to earn just one comp point to trigger a new 6 month expiration date. If you’re a Total Rewards Visa holder this is easy, just make any purchase one dollar or greater using your card.

There is an easy workaround to these rules, however, and it actually makes earning the Diamond or the Seven Stars level rewards much easier. Customers can also acquire a Total Rewards Visa and link it to their personal account; it earns 1 loyalty/tier point for each dollar spent and it ensures that loyalty points will never expire Update February 2012: Thanks to ILoveVegas1119 from TipAdvisor, pointing out that our information was in-correct. Expert Total Rewards Tips

Rather than flood this section with a bullet type list, or cover tons of common sense information let me instead debunk one the greatest myths about the Total Rewards program. You’ll hear this on the tables, and also read it on forums… “Caesars (Harrah’s) doesn’t care about table game players”. This is false, the players they don’t care about are the ones who jump table to table and ultimately don’t gamble much. There are a few reasons for this, but for starters: it’s hard for a floor supervisor to get a good idea of how much someone gambled during a 10 minute or even one hour session. For this reason their proprietary equation that awards comp points and tier score point for table game play uses time as a MAJOR factor.

To explain let’s look at how the casinos award points for table game play. First off each specific game has its own hourly advantage rate which we’ll call X. Figure X is based on how many hands, rolls, spins or whatever are played on average per hour, and what the casinos house edge is for that game. So let’s say the casino has determined that if you’re betting $1.00 per hand on average, over one hour they expect to average $1.15 profit, well then here X is $1.15. The other factors are time spent on the table, which we’ll call T, and average bet size which we’ll call A. Their starting equation is: (A*X)*T

Let’s say we’re betting $35 per hand (A) and sat for 1.50 hours (T) and we’ve already determined for them X is $1.15. Here we plug in (35*1.15*)*1.5 = $60.38. This is how the casino expects to make as a result of you sitting at the table. However this is just estimate. If you buy in for $2,000 at a table, bet $350 and as soon as the floor supervisor walks away start betting $45.00 per hand. You can probably get away with earning near eight times the comp rate you should be earning for say 10, 20 or maybe even 30 minutes. Casinos don’t like that risk, plus they’re also in the business of rewarding the most loyal players first. So what happens here is something like this.

• 1 hour of play = 2% payback in comps

• 2 hours of play = 3% payback in comps

• 3 hours of play = 4% payback in comps

• 4 hours of play = 8% payback in comps

• 6 hours of play = 11% payback in comps

• 8 hours of play = 16% payback in comps

As a reminder we just calculated 1.5 hours earned the casino an expected $60.38. If you were getting 2% payback in comps that’s $1.21, if you did this 4 times (each time its own session) you’ll have played 6 hours and earned $4.84 in comps. However if you played those 6 hours all at the same time you’d earn $26.57 in comps. Now for disclaimer purposes, these numbers are ones I made up. I’m simply illustrating the key to earning comp points at table games is to play longer hours.

While I did make up the numbers, the considerable jump at the 4 hour and 8 hour marks are legit; this is a proven fact advantage players have been open to share. To get a good comp point rate at Total Rewards’ table games, sitting at the same table (bathroom breaks okay so long as leave chips on the table) for four will help you accomplish this. For diehard gamblers, sitting 8 hours or more will give you an even larger payback. Understanding this and adjusting appropriately will earn you a great deal of comps.

Another area to comment on is tier score. As you start gambling table games, you might soon realize you tier score earning and comp point earnings rarely seem to correlate. If you play different stakes, or even visit multiple Total Rewards casinos on the same day this will be even more the case. This is because for tier score the average stake is an extremely important factor. You tier score is updated every 24 hours. I won’t go into the specifics because it’s more complex than most would want to read but will say this. If you’re betting $200.00 per hand for 4 hours at Pai Gow, then are bored and decide to kill some time betting $5.00 per hand blackjack, you’ll actually be lowering your tier score earnings instead of improving them, for the day. Yes you’ll get more comp points because each session is separate for those, but their tier score merges all table game sessions together and uses average stake. The tip: if you’re concerned with backend comps (such as complimentary suites) and tier score, don’t give you card when just messing around well below your usual stakes.

The final tip… make sure Total Rewards is the right program for you before getting too deeply concerned with tier score accumulation. If you’re local to Las Vegas you might consider one of the smaller local friendly casinos as tourist strip fascination wears off in time. Total Rewards- Conclusion

Even though Caesars Entertainment tried to create a four-tier reward system that would appeal to everyone, it definitely came up short for the average player. Besides a weekend tournament invite, Platinum members really have nothing to look forward to in terms of perks except for the occasional freebie or meal comp.

On the other hand, heavy betting over a short period of time can influence reward levels just like in previous gaming eras or status can simply be purchased outside of Caesars completely with the Visa card offer. The average person could easily qualify for Diamond status just by paying off their monthly expenses with the Total Rewards credit card, which makes the only exclusive group the Seven Stars.

Overall, the Seven Stars rewards are excellent when compared with the rest of the industry but Diamond and the other tiers are somewhat lacking. High rollers should definitely make it a point to speak to a Caesars representative before wagering so they are guaranteed entry into Seven Stars program immediately after their first visit.
