Maestro is a debit card brand that was introduced in 1992 by MasterCard Worldwide. In the United Kingdom, it incorporates the debit card launched by Midlands Bank in 1988 that was formerly known as “Switch.” Maestro provides PIN-based, direct cash access from a user’s bank account, both domestically and abroad, via a secure global network of ATMs, retail shops and websites.
As of 2012, more than 659 million Maestro branded cards had been issued worldwide. They are welcomed at some 3.7 million shops and other outlets in 60 countries around the world. Included among those are no fewer than 1,138 gambling web sites, which range from major online casinos like bet365, EuroGrand and BetFred Casino to the National Lottery U.K.
It should be noted that although Maestro can be used for making deposits at credit card casinos, it does not have a credit function. Maestro is strictly used for debit transactions only. That means any funds to be deposited in an online casino must already be available in the user’s bank account.
There are several advantages associated with using a Maestro card for deposits. First and foremost, if the funds in the bank account are available, the transaction is guaranteed of approval. Unlike credit cards, there is no intermediary acceptance required, which is the most common cause of deposit failures.
On the other hand, Maestro offers the benefits of immediate availability of the deposited funds; a lower fee structure (if any at all) compared to credit cards; and added protection against unauthorized use online. The latter is a function of a MasterCard innovation known as SecureCode.
SecureCode is a unique personal password selected by the card user or a list of single use one-time passwords generated from an authentication device issued by the user’s bank. Maestro card holders must make sure that their card issuers offer the SecureCode service, and then follow their instructions to register their cards.
Using SecureCode when making a Maestro card deposit is a straightforward process, and the update to the user’s account balance should take no more than about two minutes. At Party Casino, for example, eight simple steps are involved, as follows:
1. Login to your account.
2. Go to the “Cashier” and Select “Deposit.”
3. Click on “Deposit” beside the Maestro Card option.
4. Enter the amount you want to deposit and bonus code (if you have one).
5. Complete the required details on the form and click “Submit.”
6. The next screen will indicate whether your Maestro transaction was successful or unsuccessful.
7. If the transaction is unsuccessful, you will receive an error message along with the reason for failure.
8. If successful, you will get the message “Successful Debit Card Purchase” and a unique transaction ID which you may keep for your records.
Another convenience that is available for making deposits is Maestro Prepaid. This type of Maestro card looks just like the normal debit card, with a card number, signature strip and company branding. However, in addition to having no credit function, Maestro is unlike the debit version because it is not linked to a bank account with an overdraft facility. It is only possible to spend the money that has been loaded onto it.
A complete list of the 1,000+ credit card casinos that accept Maestro cards for deposit can be found at CasinoCity.com. From the homepage, simply type “Maestro” in the search box. Those sites which still accept “Switch” will also be displayed.
